Mike Haynes is a columnist for the Faith section of the Amarillo Globe-News. His column appears every other Sunday. (E-mail him at haynescolumn@gmail.com.)
I've been married to Kathy (an Amarillo girl) since 1991. She worked at Harrington Cancer Center in Amarillo for 28 years before moving to Panhandle Cancer Care Center in January 2013. From 1991 to 2016, I taught journalism at Amarillo College (not quite starting a chain of spelling schools as my high school class prophecy said, but close!). No kids, but we spend quite a bit of time watching nieces and nephews play basketball, tennis, etc. And after our white Pekingese (that's a dog) named Abbey (after the Beatles' Abbey Road) died in August 2019, we now have a mostly tan Pekingese named Elle (short for Eleanor Rigby, the Beatles' song). I lived in Lubbock for about 15 years, working at Texas Tech and the Lubbock newspaper, before moving closer to home in 1990. I write a column in the Faith section of the Amarillo Globe-News.
